Ceylon Spice Trails: A Legacy Rooted in the Heart of Sri Lanka
The story of Ceylon Spice Trails is not just about spices
it’s about heritage, resilience, and a deep-rooted connection to the land. Our journey begins decades ago, in the lush hills of Udunuwara, Kandy, where our grandfather, D.B. Warakawa, cultivated some of the finest spices Ceylon had to offer. He oversaw lands rich in black pepper, mace, and other treasured spices, working closely with the farmers who knew the art of spice cultivation like second nature.
Over time, our family, deeply ingrained in the food and beverage and hospitality industries, expanded into new ventures. However, the essence of those fields, the knowledge passed down through generations, and the unmistakable quality of true Ceylon spices remained in our blood.
Over time, our family, deeply ingrained in the food and beverage and hospitality industries, expanded into new ventures. However, the essence of those fields, the knowledge passed down through generations, and the unmistakable quality of true Ceylon spices remained in our blood.
In 2017, we decided to revive this legacy. We knew that the world deserved to experience the true richness of Ceylon’s spices, unadulterated and pure. That’s when Ceylon Spice Trails was born—a business built on heritage, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
Today, we stand as a company that bridges tradition with modern innovation. With exclusive agreements with local farmers, we ensure that our spices are harvested with the same care and dedication as in the past. Our family-run operation spans three international locations—Sri Lanka, Canada, and Mauritius—with a logistics partner in Abu Dhabi, enabling us to bring premium Ceylon spices directly to the global market.
The People Behind the Spice
Every business has its backbone, and ours is family. I, Kanishka Warakawa, oversee operations in Sri Lanka, ensuring that every product meets our high standards. My aunt, Priyangani Dissanayake, a seasoned consultant, handles logistics and transportation from our Canadian office in Vancouver, BC. My father, Ananda Warakawa, a veteran international food expert and taster, is the mastermind behind our unique spice blends—ensuring that every product is crafted to perfection.
Our buying office in Wattala, Sri Lanka, serves as the central hub for processing and quality control. From here, we oversee everything—sourcing, packaging, and distribution—without intermediaries. Unlike many suppliers, we control every aspect of our supply chain, allowing us to maintain authenticity, traceability, and unparalleled quality.
More Than Just a Spice Business
We are not just sellers of spices; we are curators of tradition. Our GMP-certified facilities (first obtained in 2018 and renewed three times) uphold the highest quality standards. But our mission extends beyond business—we actively support local farmers by introducing better production practices and free training on sustainable harvesting. Technology plays a role in improving efficiency, but never at the expense of authenticity.
Beyond Spices: A Commitment to Community and Compassion
At Ceylon Spice Trails, our mission extends beyond bringing premium spices to the world—we believe in giving back to the land and its people, including those without a voice. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw firsthand how stray animals struggled without food and medical care. That’s why we launched a charitable initiative, donating 10% of our monthly profits toward feeding and vaccinating stray dogs. What started as an emergency response has now become a core part of our business philosophy. To this day, we continue supporting animal welfare efforts across Sri Lanka, ensuring that stray dogs receive medical attention, proper food, and a chance at a better life. Because for us, success isn’t just measured in business growth—it’s about the positive impact we create in the world around us. Every purchase from Ceylon Spice Trails contributes to this cause, making a difference one spice and one life at a time.
